A mother, her three-month-old baby and three others were yesterday drowned in the
raging flood in Bayelsa State, following a head-on collision involving
two canoes used as means of transportation at the Akenfa 1 area of the
Yenagoa Local Government of the State
.
The incident, which occurred around 9am yesterday, threw residents into
mourning as the three others got drowned due to their inability to swim.
The nursing mother was reportedly drowned while trying to save her baby after the collision.
Local
divers were immediately engaged by the State Government to recover the
bodies of the deceased, even as Princess Egbe, the State Coordinator of
the National Anti-Corruption Corps, alerted the State Government
Committee on Flood, which immediately deployed officials, including the
Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society, Comrade Tony Ile, to the
scene of the accident.
Meanwhile, State Chairman of the Civil
Liberty Organisation, Chief Nengi James, has visited the relief camps of
flood victims in the State with cash donations and food items worth
over One Million Naira.
He urged local and international donor
agencies, including the United Nations, to come to the aide of the flood
victims in the State, as, according to him, the situation is getting
worse by the day.
James, however, expressed worry over the lack
of proper documentation for relief materials donated by public-spirited
individuals, advising that a special account be opened for donation to
avoid diversion of funds.
